Runoff elections possible for three school board seats

LOUISBURG -- Some Franklin County Board of Education candidates will have decisions to make.
While Tuesday's primary election revealed the highest vote getters, the race for the school board -- which is a non-partisan race -- requires a majority, meaning that a declared winner has to receive at least 50 percent of the vote.
[Other primary races to determine who wins a party's nomination only require 30 percent.]
District 1 School Board member Meghan Jordan was unopposed and thus was re-elected.
But, none of the candidates in the District 3, District 5 or at large District 7 races attained that 50 percent, meaning the second highest vote getters could request a runoff.
Steven Gupton edged out incumbent Elizabeth Keith, Tammy Raynor Petrosillo bested Christopher Perry and incumbent Paige Sayles beat Erin Patterson Reid in Districts 3, 5 and 7, respectively, as their closest competitor.
Elections staff continue to count provisional and absentee ballots through the date of canvass, which is May 27.
Each of the school board competitors has until seven days following canvassing -- which makes election results official -- to request a runoff.
The second primary date is scheduled for July 26.
