NO TAX INCREASE!
Commissioners voted 4-2 FOR NO TAX INCREASES FOR UPCOMING FISCAL YEAR (JULY 1, 2019 - JUNE 30, 2020).
A packed crowd caused the June 3 commissioners meeting to move to the Hobgood Courthouse Annex.
LOUISBURG -- At the June 3, 2019 commissioners meeting Republican Commissioners Michael Schriver and David Bunn voted against the budget, while Harry Foy and the three Democratic commissioners voted for it. Democrat Commissioner Cedric Jones was not at Monday night's meeting, meaning that three Republicans and three Democrats (Shelley Dickerson, James Speed and Sid Dunston) could cause a tie.
A proposal of reducing the tax increase of four cents to 1.7 cents did not get adopted due in part to the 3-3 make up of the commissioners. It is believed that if Jones was present at the meeting, the Democrats would have likely voted for a tax increase.
Foy said he voted for the budget, because there is no tax increase. However, Schriver said that he could not vote for the proposed revised budget as he was just given the whittled down version of it earlier on Monday, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the budget workshop. At the meeting Monday night, Schriver asked the commissioners to wait and vote on the budget at the upcoming June 17 meeting as he needed time to thoroughly go through the new proposed budget.
Schriver contends that even though the county had funds to pay several additional million dollars this year, he warned that next year's (2020-21) budget may not be able to cover all of the county's expenses.
To be clear, Schriver and Bunn would have voted no on tax increases, but Schriver wanted more time to see what could be cut in the new revised budget.
