GOP Applauds Virginia
Legislature’s “NO-Toll on I-85” Decision
Warrenton, NC
March 16, 2006:
Republican
Party leaders from Vance, Warren, Franklin and Granville Counties are very
pleased with the Virginia General Assembly’s decision to reconsider a $5.00 toll
on I-85 at the NC/VA border.
“We’ve been active in our efforts to encourage the legislators representing
Virginia’s I-85 border counties to reconsider this action,” said Mike Wilburt,
Warren County GOP chairman, speaking for the group. “Chuck Stires was quick to
make contact with Virginia Delegate Tommy Wright and state Senator Frank Ruff
with our concerns over the proposed toll as well as our Republican Senate Caucus
in Raleigh.”
Mr. Stires is the Republican candidate for the NC Senate representing the four
counties.
“Both sides of the state line share a similar need to generate economic
development along this important highway. A $5.00 toll would have seriously
hampered our efforts to attract commercial and residential investment,” Stires
said. “I appreciate Del. Wright’s and Sen. Ruff’s hard work on this matter. I
look forward to working with them again on shared NC/VA border issues in the
future.”
"While Doug Berger was asleep at the wheel and didn't lift a finger to fight
this proposed toll road, the taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief that Chuck
Stires is already representing them before he's even sworn into the Senate,"
said John Edwards, second vice chairman of the Franklin County Republican Party.
"While Stires was fighting to stop the toll road, Berger was busy jacking up our
license tags from twenty to twenty-eight dollars. There's not a tax or fee that
Berger doesn't like."
Chuck Stires, and his opponent, Democratic state Senator Doug Berger, both
live in Youngsville. District 7 includes Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren
counties.
