$45 Million School Bond is 'Madness'
Mitchell: '...If it raises taxes, I'm against it. The county's taxes are too high as is.'

The public is invited to speak about the $45 million school bond at this Monday's (Feb. 20) 7:00 p.m. commissioners meeting located on the second floor of the County Administration Building on Market Street behind the old courthouse in Louisburg.

"...If it raises taxes, I'm against it. The county's taxes are too high as is," said Johnny Mitchell in the February 18 Franklin Times.

"I just think this is sort of a rush to judgment," Bob Winters said, noting that the school system should explore the possibility of year-round schools and other means to maximize the use of existing buildings. -Franklin Times, Feb. 18

Another school bond? 'Madness'

Dear Editor:

Attention Franklin County property owners: your taxes are jumping up again if you don't stop this madness.

I am getting sick and tired of seeing my property taxes go up because of all these school bonds. First, the school board wanted a $30 million bond, it passed, and my property tax jumped 8-1/2 cents. Now the school board wants a $45 million bond which will result in my property tax jumping at least five cents. That's an increase of nearly $200 per year for most homeowners!

The school board says the money will be used to build a school that was at first $30 million then it jumped to $36 million. The school board doesn't even know how much it will cost to build one of these lavish buildings so they pad this bond with an extra $9 million. And  remember they didn't even use the first bond to build one single school. So now we have a total of $75 million for one school? The school board's math doesn't add up.

Taxpayers, especially those on fixed incomes such as our senior citizens, cannot afford these massive tax increases. I urge all concerned taxpayers to attend the public hearing, 7:00 Monday night February 20 at the County Administration Building and tell the commissioners and school board to go back to the drawing board.

There's too much wasteful spending in the county and I'm getting sick and tired of being the lapdog for these massive tax increases. I have to manage my budget and can't spend more than I take in, so the county should do the same. We cannot afford to let this bond pass because not only will our property taxes soar, but we'll be stuck with a massive $100 million debt thanks to the incompetency of our liberal tax-and-spend elected officials.

And for those of you who want to spend every dime on a fancy new school, you pay for it out of your own pocket not mine!
