RALEIGH – Today, Dan Mansell condemned the attack by Bob Etheridge on Senator John McCain, the presidential nominee for the Republican Party. Mansell said, “Bob Etheridge has stooped to a new low in dismissing John McCain as a presidential candidate due to his age, and he has shown a total disregard for his service to our nation.”
The Dunn Daily news reported Etheridge saying: “This year we are going to make history in the presidential race. We will do one of three things. We will elect a woman, an
African-American or we will make a mistake and elect the oldest person ever elected to the White House.”
Mansell said, “Senator John McCain served our nation in the US Navy for 23 years. In July 1967, McCain was nearly killed when the USS Forrestal caught fire, killing 134 of his shipmates. McCain escaped from his burning plane, and while trying to save another pilot, an explosion left McCain with shrapnel in his legs and torso to this day.” Mansell went on to say: “When McCain was shot down in October 1967, he spent 6 years being tortured in the infamous Hanoi Hilton. John McCain was offered his freedom on numerous occasions, as his father was the chief commander of all forces in the Vietnam theatre. It is a measure of the man that he refused to leave until every prisoner captured before him was released. If Bob Etheridge truly believes that John McCain’s age makes him unfit to serve, then I would ask him to look at his own birth certificate.”
Mansell went on to say: “Bob Etheridge has shown a blatant disregard for John McCain’s service to our nation. Etheridge should be ashamed of his comments and should apologize to Senator McCain and to all our veterans who don’t share his liberal viewpoint. This from a man who is a Vietnam veteran himself! What’s next? Is Jane Fonda going to be campaigning in the district for him?”
“The people of the North Carolina 2nd district have a stark choice to make in the election in November. Will they vote for Bob Etheridge, who continually shows that he is out of touch with the people of the 2nd district, and who continues to be a Democrat-party-yes man in a do-nothing Congress, or will they vote for me, Dan Mansell, who will represent all the people of the 2nd district, regardless of political affiliation?”
Dan Mansell calls on Bob Etheridge to apologize to Senator John McCain for his bumbling, ill-conceived remarks, and to confirm that the content of McCain’s character and political viewpoints are more important than the year that he was born.
