Edwards Encourages Tax Deduction for Lottery
The following letter to the editor
appeared in the April 5 Franklin Times:
Lottery: another tax
Dear Editor:
I encourage everyone to hold onto their losing lottery tickets and make a tax
deduction from their state income taxes. After all, it's called the North
Carolina Education Lottery which is a contribution towards education.
Let's say you blow $1,000 this year in losing lottery tickets and also owe
$1,000 in income taxes.
You turn in your losing tickets and owe nothing more to the government since
they already have your $1,000.
This will even encourage those who try to avoid paying income taxes to buy
lottery tickets.
If you buy more lottery tickets than what you owe in taxes, the government
simply keeps the difference.
And for those of you who say the lottery isn't a tax, please don't turn in your
losing tickets for a tax deduction.
That would be hypocritical, now wouldn't it?
