State Senator Doug Berger called those who opposed the
$45-million bond tax "extremists" at an April 24 school bond meeting in
Louisburg. (It's amusing that Berger, whose membership includes the Democratic
Socialists of America and the Progressive Caucus, is calling others extremists.)
So, which is it, Commissioner Sid Dunston? At
the May 8 commissioners meeting, Chuck Stires, Republican candidate for state
Senate District 7, said during the public comments segment that he would present
suggestions in the near future for funding school renovation and construction
since the $45-million bond tax was defeated May 2. (Earlier this year Stires, on
behalf of the Franklin GOP, asked the commissioners and school board to delay
the bond on the ballot until November.)
At the May 15 board of commissioners meeting, Stires was to speak during public
comments about his suggestions for the future of Franklin County schools. But
Dunston didn't allow Stires to speak and accused him of "politics."
"I'm at a loss," Stires told the Franklin GOP later in the meeting.
So, at one meeting Dunston allows Stires to speak, but at another meeting he's
muted.
Just like Democrat state Sen. Doug Berger, who has flip-flopped on tobacco
taxes, Dunston flip-flops on who can and cannot speak during public comments.

So, dear readers, you will be the first
ones to see the document that Stires was to read portions of to the
commissioners on May 15th:

By the way, on April 24, at a school bond meeting, it was Berger who called
those who opposed the $45-million bond tax "extremists."
Now that the shoe's on the other foot, Dunston tries to stifle Stires' comments.
But Dunston must have forgotten about 2003 as shown in this photo:

That's Dunston, over a year before he was elected commissioner, pleading to the
commissioners to save former assistant county manager Angela Harris' job. In the
background, halfway standing, is Berger before he was elected to the senate. To
the right is none other than "Boss Hogg" Ralph Knott, the Democrat kingpin.
The commissioners allowed Dunston, Berger, and Democrat chairman Bobbie
Richardson to ask that Harris' job be saved. In fact, Richardson blasted
Democrat commissioners Raymond Stone and John Ball for eliminating Harris' job.
On top of that, Republican Harry Foy, who was elected chairman by Stone and
Ball, also allowed Richardson to blast him. (By the way, now that Dunston is the
chairman, why hasn't he and other Democrat commissioners tried to reinstate
Harris' job? Was she just their pawn?)
When someone disagrees with Dunston he calls them "grandstanding," which he
accused Republican commissioners Harry Foy and Don Lancaster, when they asked
that the restitution that former tax collector Donnie Rudd paid back to the
county be refunded to the taxpayers who were swindled.
Now, when it gets too hot in the kitchen for Dunston and his buddy Berger, he
doesn't allow public comment unless it's favorable for the Democrats and their
leader, Boss Hogg Ralph Knott.
This Web site has been visited over 21,500 times since August 2004. Just the
first 11 days of May, there have been over 1,000 visits. This story will be read
by hundreds much to the chagrin of Dunston, Berger, Knott, etc.
And unlike the Democrats, the Republican Party is for honest and open
government. Maybe Rev. Dunston ought to drop by one of our Republican meetings
and find out that we all don't agree on all the issues all the time. We discuss
them openly and everybody knows where we stand. We don't have muppet strings
contolled by Boss Hogg Ralph Knott which apparently are dictating what some
Democrat leaders can and cannot do.
Dunston may be able to stop public comments from those who have different
opinions, but we're happy to show Republican Chuck Stires' comments uncensored
by Dunston.

Senate District 7 includes Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties. The
district was created in 2004 and Berger was first elected that year.
