Louisburg: County GOP Chairman
Jeremy Neal, left, tells WRAL-TV and WNCN-TV that
a special election should take place to replace
former Sheriff Pat Green during a special commissioners meeting, Jan. 31, 2011.
At a special called session by the
Franklin County Board of Commissioners Jan. 31, 2011, the topic was about former
Democrat Sheriff Pat Green who abruptly resigned Jan. 30. The State Bureau of
Investigation is looking into money missing from the Sheriff's Department, and
Chief Deputy Elliott Pernell will be the acting sheriff until the commissioners
decide on a new sheriff.
The commissioners met in a closed session for about 1-1/2 hours to discuss the
Green matter, before coming out and making the announcement that they will wait
until the SBI concludes its investigation before they appoint a new sheriff.
Franklin County Republican Party Chairman Jeremy Neal told the media that a
special election should be held for sheriff, but the county attorney said that
would have to be adopted by the General Assembly. Neal also noted that the
Democrats have replaced five people in the last year: three on the school board,
state House District 49 (which was eventually won by Republican Glen Bradley),
and soon to replace the register of deeds seat which has two years left. Neal
did not think it was fair that the Democratic controlled commissioners could
appoint a sheriff to fulfill nearly four years left of Green's term.
Green was first elected sheriff in 2006
and won again in 2010.
