"Al Quedea Terrorists killed three thousand Americans on September 11, 2001, yet Democratic state Sen. Doug Berger is more concerned about how terrorists are being treated and continues to ignore the rest of us in his district," said John Edwards, second vice chairman of the Franklin County Republican Party. "Berger was elected to represent Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren county citizens, not American-hating terrorists. What Berger is doing is tantamount to treason."

Sen. Berger, along with 21 other legislative Democrats, sent a letter to the state attorney general demanding that an investigation be conducted against a company in Johnston County for the "company's alleged involvement in a conspiracy to support and kidnap and torture of individuals."

"These so-called individuals, as Berger and his liberal cohorts call them, are terrorists who think nothing of killing as many Americans as possible. Since Berger is too busy worrying about the poor terrorists' rights, they can call his hurtline: 919-715-8363 or e-mail
Dougb@ncleg.net," Edwards said. "Terrorists and taxes are his favorite words. Berger is a disgrace. Period."

New: N&O Letter Says It's 'Nonsense' on Treason

February 26, 2007 Raleigh News and Observer
Tantamount indeed

A Feb. 10 People's Forum letter captioned "American tradition" blasted the Franklin County Republican Party's vice chairman and Web site, www.FranklinNCGOP.com, for calling the North Carolina Democratic legislators' concerns "tantamount to treason" about whether some poor al-Qaeda terrorists have been subjected to Chinese water torture.

Since 9/11 we haven't had another terrorist attack on our shores, thanks to interrogating American-hating terrorists. If it's not tantamount to treason for the Democratic legislators to be more concerned about terrorists' rights than protecting our lives from another attack, then what is it? Has the North Carolina Democratic Party forgotten that 3,000 American lives were lost on 9/11?

Letters to the Editor

American tradition

In a Feb. 2 Peoples Forum letter, the vice chairman [Danny Pearce] of the Franklin County Republican Party asserted that the 22 North Carolina state legislators who signed a letter asking the state attorney general to investigate Aero Contractors' involvement in an alleged conspiracy to kidnap and torture individuals were more concerned about torture of al-Qaeda suspects than about protecting American lives.

On the Franklin County Republican Party's Web site [www.FranklinNCGOP.com], the letter-writer calls the legislators' concern tantamount to treason. It is nonsense to characterize as treason a concern to defend the basic human rights for which the American Revolution was fought.

Some persons kidnapped by the CIA and tortured in other countries later were found to have been mistakenly identified as suspects. Though the number of such victims is unknown, the number of prisoners detained and released at Guantanamo give some picture of the proportions of captured terrorists against whom there is any basis for suspicion.

According to a report in October of last year, of 775 captives brought to Guantanamo, credible criminal cases existed against about 100, and 340 had been released.

Arbitrary kidnapping and torture of random suspects is not what America stands for.

Terror and torture

Regarding the Jan. 31 People's Forum letter captioned "Downplaying abuse," it seems to me that the writer, along with 22 Democrats in the state legislature, is more concerned if some poor al-Qaeda terrorists are being subjected to Chinese water torture than they are about protecting American lives [Oct. 27 article "Lawmakers call for probe"].

Three thousand Americans lost their lives to al-Qaeda terrorists on 9/11, but these legislators seemed to have forgotten that. The Web site
www.FranklinNCGOP.com lists the names of the 22 Democratic legislators.
