Failure of school bond disappointing

To tell you the truth, this month didn’t start off all too well. The failure of the school bond was a huge disappointment. Saying anything else would be a lie and my Mom taught me to always tell the truth. And that is a lesson I learned early and it’s a lesson that guides everything I do personally and professionally.

Several months ago we began the 2006 Bond Campaign. The Committee of 100 (a private, non-profit group of business and community leaders) immediately stepped up to the plate to support the bond and to act as the fiscal agent for the campaign. The Committee is a long-established group of citizens who genuinely care about Franklin County, the people who live here, and the future we face together. To my knowledge, no public school employee belongs to the Committee of 100; the Committee has no affiliation with the administration of Franklin County Schools or the Franklin County Board of Education.

The bond’s failure is a huge disappointment, but the Committee of 100 is not the big loser; nor am I, nor is my staff. In the face of the bond defeat, the biggest losers are the children of Franklin County.

Regardless of what we do, students will continue, in ever increasing numbers, to arrive at our doorstep. They will expect to be educated by caring and competent teachers in safe, secure, and up-to-date classrooms. Without a moment’s hesitation, I can guarantee that we will do our very best to achieve that goal.

And I can also guarantee that we will continue to inform the citizens in Franklin County regarding our facility needs and the cost of satisfying those needs. We will continue to do all our work in a thoughtful and transparent manner. We will work to improve communication with parents and other members of the community. (Look for the launch of our new e-mail newsletter in July!) Why? Because we are talking about children  our children. How thoroughly and carefully we teach our children is the only certain predictor for their future success.

Mr. Bernard Hall, chair of the Board of Education, and I invite you to attend our monthly board meeting, typically the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Mitchell Media Center. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you what they “think” happened  attend the meeting and draw your own conclusions. The school board is one public body that sincerely invites the public to come. Every meeting offers a chance for public comment. Come, listen to us. Come, say something to us! Come be a part of the governing of your schools.

Again, I want to thank everyone who supported the bond and especially the Committee of 100 who generously and tirelessly supported the bond campaign.

Para decirles la verdad, este mes no empezó muy bien. La pérdida del bono escolar fue un fracaso enorme. Sería una mentira decir menos y mi madre siempre me ensenaba decir la verdad. Y eso es una lección que aprendí temprano y es una lección que me guia en todo lo que hago personalmente y profesionalmente.

Hace unos meses empezamos la 2006 Bond Campaign (Campaña para el Bono del 2006). El comite de 100 (un grupo privado sin fines de lucro de lideres de la comunidad y negocio) se sumo inmediatamente a apoyar el bono y actuarse como agente fiscal por la campaña. El comite es un grupo ya establecido por mucho tiempo de ciudadanos a quiénes les importa mucho el Condado de Franklin, la gente que vive aqui, y el futuro que enfrentamos juntos. Que yo sepa, no hay ningun empleado de las escuelas públicas que es miembro del Comite de 100; el Comite no está vinculado con la administración de las Escuelas del Condado de Franklin o la Junta Educativa del Condado de Franklin

La pérdida del bono es un fracaso enorme pero el Comite de100 no es el mayor perdedor; ni soy yo; ni lo es mi personal tampoco. En medio de la derrota del bono, los mayores perdedores son los niños del Condado de Franklin.

A pesar de lo que hagamos. los estudiantes van a seguir llegando en números mayores a nuestro umbral. Van a esperar a ser educados por maestros simpaticos y competentes en un lugar salvo y sano, con salones de clases al día. Sin un momento de indecision, puedo garantizar que haremos lo mejor que podamos para lograr esa meta.

Y también puedo garantizar que vamos a seguir informándoles a los ciadadanos del Condado de Franklin con respecto a nuestras necesicades de facilidades y el costo de cumplir esas necesidades. Vamos a seguir haciendo nuestro trabajo en una manera respetuosa y transparente. Trabajaremos para mejorar comunicaciones con padres y otros miembros de la comunidad. (Busque por el despegue de nuestro informativo correo electrónico en julio). ¿Porqúe? Porque estamos hablando sobre niños--nuestros niños. Tal como ensenamos meticulosamente y cuidadosamente a nuestros niños es el unico pronostico de su éxito en el futuro.

El Sr. Bernard Hall, presidente de la Junta Educativa y yo les invito a asistir nuestra reunión mensual, norrmalmente el segundo lunes del mes a las 7:00p.m. al Mitchell Media Center. No se deje esperar para que otra persona le diga lo que “piensa” que sucedió---asista la reunion y llegue a sus propias conclusiones. La junta educativa es un cuerpo publico que invita sinceramente que venga el público. Cada reunión ofrece un chance por comentario público. Venga, escúchenos. Venga, diganos algo. Hagase una parte del gobernante de su escuela.

Otra vez, quiero agradecerles a todos los que apoyaron el bono y especialmente al Comite de 100 que apoyo generosamente e incansablemente la campaña del bono.
